Something got wonky in the way it was rendering the spreadsheet, then all my icons in the SaveAs dialogue turned black. Now they're black in the SaveAs window for all my programs. In reply to BenlBrown's post on January 25, I have the same problem here with Win8. I am also have used OpenOffice Calc. So that might be the right direction.
But where can I set the standard folder Icon for all folders at once? As I have nothing customized this should work for me. I just did some tests. Windows Explorer shows all icon correctly.
Folder or filebrower windows show black icons for folders. Setting the icon for a special folder creates in that folder a desktop. Now in the folder or filebrowser the choosen icon is displayed. Additionally I could not find any change in the registry while I changed the icon. In my opinion there needs to be a registry entry that tells windows which icon to show if there is no desktop.
And that entry is changed by something! Some more testing: If I create a new useraccount then the new useraccount has all icons correct! So it needs to be a user specific issue and therefore it needs to be a value in the registry I suppose. In reply to mikeheide's post on January 26, That is much different than the problem I had.
