Using an image is a good idea too, but you may have issues with users not knowing how to lay it behind the text. Also this won't necessarily work if they have documents of a different layout ie. By default, this makes the value in the first instance 1, the second 2 and so on. As long as variable2 is set to zero at the start of the document, this solution will work nicely. The first field in the second section of the document assigns the value of the number of pages in section 1 to variable2 by assigning it the value of variable1. You only want the last two formulas, for generating section page numbers and the overall page numbers, to show.
It should be possible to achieve the same results using bookmarks. Microsoft Word fields support most page numbering schemes, unless you want to display the current page number within a section. For that, you'll need this special technique. Word supplies a number of fields that make most page numbering schemes easy to implement, but there's a definite hole.
